Fly Fishing Glossary H-P

Hackle

Feathers from from a chicken's neck.

Herl

Fibres from large feathers such as an Peacock.

Larva

The stage an insect goes through after the egg stage.

Leader

The tapered line between the fly line and the tippet.

Monofilament

Single stand line or nylon.

Nymph

Water dwelling insect in it's intermediate life stage.

Palmer

Fishing fly that has a cock hackle feather wound along the full length of the body.

Parr

A First year trout that still carries parr marks along it's body, normally dark coloured spots.

Priest

A slim and blunt instrument, weigthed in the forward section that is used to kill the fish instantly. (My personal choice is a bronze casted version)
